MANY DEPARTMENT_s_H_A_.... v_ E___________ I secretaries ~~~~~~~~ Amid the everyday chaos of paperwork, homework, grades, schedules and incessant phone calls stands a unique and important group of people at Harding-secretaries. On Harding's campus there were many secretaries. Three of these secretaries were Brenda Seawel, Kelly Milner and Mary Lou Daughety. Seawel has been with Harding since September of 1999. She moved here with her family from Houston and heard that the communications department was looking for a secretary. "I feel like it was a perfect fit," Seawel said. Milner started as the Honors College secretary in May of 1997. She moved here with her family from Oklahoma and heard of an opening. Milner went in for the interview and was hired that day. Daughety has been working for Harding for nearly 20 years, the last 16 in the International Programs office. She was hired by former dean Dr. Don Shackelford when he asked her husband, Larry, if she was interested in the position. These three secretaries have a common reason for loving their jobs. "I enjoy TO AID EVERYDAY LIFE working with the students," Daughety said. Some people wondered how the secretaries stayed so nice all day. "Coffee," Milner said jokingly. "It's very easy to be nice. We're not chewed out or griped at every day. It is just not the norm." Their dedication to their jobs also helped their constant smiles. "I see it as part of my job description to help the students and faculty in any way I can. "It's fun knowing your input can make someone's day better," Milner said. Sometimes, it is just stubborn patience that gets secretaries through each day. "Some days are worse than others," Daughety said. "But I know that 'this too shall pass."' Each day that passes in the individual departments is different and unique for Harding secretaries. "The next student that comes in doesn't know what has happened before them," Daughety said. "I greet each one as if they were the only student who has come in that day." -Kira Leigh Kalah Williams-Poughkeepsie, .Y. Beth Wilson-Murfreesboro, Tenn. Melissa Wilson-Maryland Hts., Mo.
