Searcy n:tore than just a college town for many Harding students Some students called Searcy home long before they ever enrolled at Harding_ To them, Searcy is more than a college town - it is a special place full of warmth and security_ While growing up in Searcy, Student Association President Matt Milligan knew little a.bout Harding University. It was not until he was in the tenth grade that he met some people affiliated with Harding. "Searcy does not revolve around Harding," he said. "Searcy has a good environment, and it's not just because of Harding. It is a well-churched community and a good place to grow up." Milligan said his favorite aspect ofSearcy is the history he sees in it. "I love riding around town with friends because I can see myself growing up and how I've changed and how Searcy has changed. This town's always been here for me," Junior Steve Cloer grew up in a "Harding family." The son of Dr. Eddie Cloer, professor of Bible and preaching, Steve attended Harding Academy before beginning his college education at Harding University. Cloer said Harding is a microcosm within the Searcy community. "Living in Searcy, Harding fades into the background," Cloer said. "If you're in the Harding microcosm it's all you're concerned with, but if you're on the outside, Harding is just something that's there." Cloer said the most difficult thing about being a Harding student from Searcy is that he does not have the luxury of going home. "You get lost in the crowd. You have no home church to go back to," he said. "All my friends had gone away, and home wasn't the same anymore." For many students whose hometown is Searcy, this town is more than Harding University. It's home. - Hannah Rhodes Junior Steve Cloer participates in chapel. Like Cloer, many Harding students were born and raised in the Searcy community before calling Harding their home. Photo by Daniel Dubois. Aerren Myers-van Buren. Ark. Rebecca Myers-Star. Miss.
