Rappellers say outdoor sport offers challenging recreation Bright sunlight warms the rocks around you as you secure your ropes to the pine tree that serves as an anchor. You and your buddy strap into harnesses, fasten your ropes, grab your gloves and with confident strides you approach the edge ofa cliffseveral hundred feet off the ground. Without even a glance you take hold of the rope, lean back and take that first step over the edge of the cliff. Many people at Harding regularly participated in rappelling this year. They rappelled in places such as Riverside Park in Searcy, Sugarloaf Mountain in Heber Springs and Lobo's landing, which is between Heber Springs and Pangburn. Andy Brazle has developed a reputation as a rappelling expert among his peers. Brazle has been rappelling since he was in fifth grade. "Rappelling is easy to do if you can conquer your nerves enough to go over the edge of the cliff" Brazle said. "Getting over the initial fear is the hardest part, after that it is a blast," senior Josh Rudd said. Many people wonder how .much danger is involved when rappelling "It is dangerous, just because of the possibility of falling. But if you are careful and take care of your equipment, it is a very safe activity:' Brazle said. Despite the dangers, rappelling offers an eXCltmg challenge for many Harding students. - Mac Bell Senior Andy Brazle leaps in the air while rappelling at Sugarloaf Mountain last fall.
