College bands animate student life Some people dream of being doctors, lawyers, astronauts or teachers. Others want to be fire fighters or policemen. But then there are those special few who dream of being rock stars. That dream is alive on Harding's campus. Many students are devoting much of their time and energy to being part of band. "My band occupies time that I would just be sitting around, and it relaxes me," Keith Mosley of Moose and the Dancing Crickets said. "Our band is different; we practice, but for us that's hang out time." Most band members agree it is worth adjusting their schedules to make time for practices and rehearsals. Many ofthe bands at Harding have come together as a group of friends who want to share their talents. "Wejust metandstarted playing together," Colleen O'Connell ofLiving Stones said. "When you're a musician, you realize if something clicks and it did for us." There are also band members like those in Moose and the Dancing Crickets who have known each other for a long time. "Three of us (Mike Farrell, Nate Sargent and Mosley) grew up together, so that makes ita lot of fun," Mosley said. Each of these bands brings a different type of music to their audiences. One of the most interesting things about the bands at Harding is how they came up with their names. Each name is unique and causes some people to wonder about the origin. Moose and the Dancing Crickets came up with their name one night while sitting around. ."One of the guys in our band is nicknamed Moose, so we wanted to put that in," Mosley said. "Then, I saw a cricket that was dancing around, so that's where it came from." Living Stones created their name because of Bible verses that mention "living stones." "We all have a different take on why it's our name though," O'Connell said. All of these bands helped add some entertainment to campus life. Although they are not sure if the future holds any plans for them in the music business, they enjoy playing together while at Harding. - Sarah Madden Senior Colleen O'Connell of living Stones performs in the Benson in September.
