Rooms filled with coffi ns and pitch-black tunnels make the House of Doom II as scary and as popular as its predecessor. the original House of Doom. The HouseofDoom isa haunted house entirely produced by the Society for the Advancement of Managemem (SAM) Club. Many club members participated in me haunted house, according to Carla Shehorn, junior. "1 learned a lot from t he experience," she said. "We had CO search for a building and find resources for the haunted house." "The haumed house gives club members the oppo[[uniry to put into practice many of the business skills they have acquired." Lavon Ca rter, sponsor, said. "Students must find a location for the haunted house, t h e n meti c ulous ly organi ze a nd coordinateevery aspect ofthe event, from the props and costumes to the sett ings and the schedul es of students who are involved." Howeve r, rhe SAM Club did more than just scare people. The haunted house is just one fu nd rai se r rhat rhe SAM Club sponsored in order to attend its national conference. This spr in g the membe rs attended the annual International Society for the Advancement of Management Conference. While at the conference, studen tS took part in the case analysis and presentation competition. In the competition, a team of three to fi ve students was sent a case . for an existing company. The case co ntained the company's history, information and a problem they were fac ing. For an intense six-week period, the team did research on the company and its market. During the competition, the team provided judges wi th extensive recommendations for the problems facing the company. The Harding team has a histo ry of success in this competition. "The competition gives students the opportunity to compete with other busi ness students from other universities," Carter said. "This is unbeli evable experience in researching and prese nt ing projects." According to Carter, members benefit both professionally and socially from the organization. SAM is the oldes t o rgan izat ion in the country for business and management, according to Carter. SAM was formed in the early 1900's for people in the business world. H arding formed its SAM chapter in 1981. The organizarion had approximately 50 active membe rs during the this year. It later expanded to include college students who were studying to enter the business world. T he purpose of SAM is to assist in further ing the practice of professional management rhrough the interaction of students, facul ty and operating managers.
