Marriage myths continue to be told at Harding Photo by Salomon Pineda Sophomore Kelly Swain and freshman Jon Stacy gaze into each other's eyes while sitting on one of Harding's many swings. The swings were very popular when it came to spending time with significant others or friends . It has been sa id, and to some it is common knowledge, that Harding is a marriage factory. Whether or not this is true, there are several myths that go along with that theory. One myth pe rta ins to walking through the be ll tower. Supposedly, if one walks through the bell tower with a member of the opposite sex, the two will soon be wed; however, if one walks through the arches alone, that poor soul is destined to be single throughout life. Another myth is associated with the prominent Hard ing swings. Swinging together once is special, but not all that serious. Swinging together twicewill turn heads, and swinging three times with the same person is an immediate predecessor to engagement - hence the phrase, "th ree swings and a ring." Though the myths are known to most upperclassmen, it takes a while fo r new students to catch on. "I have never rea lly heard about it before, but I don't thi nk it is true because most of those things are just legends;" freshman Dawn Moses sa id. Other newcomers are Quickly acclimated to the ways of Harding. "A lot of people get marr ied here. People take dating very seriously," sophomore transfer Klane Hanson said. "Mybrother swungwith hiswife three t imes and they got together, so it worked for them," freshman Chad Jackson said. "I do not know anyone who has walked under the be ll tower alone and has still gotten marri ed so I cannot say it is not t rue." Some beli eve that the myths are pure falsehood, and th is comes from experience. "I know for a fac t that the swing one is not true. Personalexperience has taught me that/' senior Brian Harmon said. jl I cannot say about the bell tower, but I doubt that it is true. However, I think I might have walked through it alone. I guess that means that I am in troubl e." "I think it is false because it sure didn't happen to me and I do not think that Harding is a marr iage factory because there are a lot of people who graduofe that are not married," junior Danna Johnson said. Although many people say that they do not believe the myths, they are not willing to ri sk it. "I am a little supe rstitious so I would not risk it," Jackson said. "You will never catch me walking through the bell tower bymyse lf because, if the myth is true, I sure do not want to be the one to get messed up ," Johnson said. An alternative to the swings may be to room with juni or Amy Martin. "I have already had th ree roommates get marri ed and the fourth is soon to be engaged," Martin said. Whether they are myths or whether they are truths, engaging coupl es will continue to swing, hesitant walkers will continue to vee r around the bell tower, brave soul s will continue to walk boldly through it and passe rs-bywill cont inue to gasp for ai r and poi nt. - Diane Grubbs KaTie Fouts - Searcy.
