Commuters enjoy advantages ofliving at home SeniorJeremy Luallen relaxes at home with his dog. Students who lived with parents or other relatives saw many advantages, such as being able to have pets that aren 't allowed in campus housing. Because Harding isa residential campus, students must meet certain requirements to live off campus, including, but not limited to being married, being 23 years ofage or older or livingwith a parent or guardian. Many students whose parents lived within driving distance chose to live at home for many different reasons. Each student made the choice based on personal needs and wants. Some lived with their parents for financial purposes or they wanted to spend a few more years with their parents before they moved out. Some students felt that living on campus gave them more social opportunities, while others liked living at home so they could escape the stress of coll ege life. Many, li ke senior Matthew Miller, took advantage of the opportunity to spend their last year with their family. Miller lived on campus his first three years of college, but this year he decided to move back home. "] moved back home because I am a senior and] am going to law school next year, " he said. "] decided to spend my last year at home with my family. " Those who lived with family members saw many advantages of living at home. Senior Jeremy Luallen has lived at home all of his four years at Harding. "I like living at home because it is cheaper, the food is better,] have more privacy and I have all the comforts of home, like my pool," Luallen said. However, students like junior Amy Osborne decided that they preferred to live on campus for the social activities. "] live on campus so that! can have independence and a social life," Osborne said. Sophomore Olivia Bowenagreedwith Osborne. "] decided to live on campus because I feel it does give me more independence," Bowen said. " ]f! lived at home I wou ld not be ab le to do as much. I am so much closer to my friends on campus than] wou ld have been if I lived at home." Although Osborne and Bowen felt that living on campus gave them greater independence and social opportunities, Luallen and Miller disagreed. "By living at home] have freedom from some school rules, like curfew," Luallen said. "Living at home I can do everything that goes on on campus, but] do not have to live wi th a ton of other people - not to mention] also have a nicer place to live." Miller said, "I fe lt that I have just as much independence living at home as] do on campus because] am rarely home. ] don 't really have too many run-ins with my parents because] am not there." Whatever their choice, most students were happywith their living arrangement. - Meredith Hlasta Mendy Smi th - Searcy, Ark. Accounting. Accounting Society. Dean's List. lntramurals . Phi Eta Sigma.
