Seminars help seniors prepare for real world Many Harding majors require a senior seminar that gives the students feed back so they can be more prepared when graduation comes and before they have to start working. What the class offers differs from major to major, but it has the same purpose - to teach seniors to be confident and ready for the professional world. "The students have to make presentations,"said seniorMiriamOrtega, acomputer science major. "Everyweek a different classmate talks about a chosen topic. " Ortega said that these presentations are chosen by the student and the point is to increase the student's knowledge and help him or her become aware of new computing fie lds. "The topics we have to pick are interesting and innovative- things that help us to expand our knowledge in the computer world, " she said. Ortega said that the class helped her understand things she didn't know before. "I have learned from each topic, which is good because that means we don't focus just on one part. Every week we see something different." Ortega said that in every class period she 's ready to hear something new. "It's exciting to get there and know that it is not just about having a seat and starting programming, but it is sharing knowledge," she said. Senior Cristina Rodriguez majored in fashion merchandising. Rodriguez said the objective of the seminar class was to get students ready for jobs as soon as they graduate. "The teachers and speakers we have give us tips on the best ways to get readyfor an interview," she said. "We have to know the best way to present a resume and cover letter, how to introduce ourselves and the proper attire to wear. " Rodriguez said she learned that her presentation of herself is an important part of the interview process. "We have to let them see our level of knowledge and how confident we are," she said. Senior Kim George, an electronic media major, took a senior seminar class. "What we mainly do is learn how to be ready for the job search, which will be one of the biggest steps after graduating from school," she said. George said itwas an interesting class and a weekly advice session. "They help us know that it is not easy to get a job right away," she said. "If we try our best with our resumes, cover letters, portfolios, etc., it is probable that we 'll at least give a good impression and we'll also get experience in interviews. The whole point of this class is to encourage the students to show people what we have learned and how much we are worth," George said. - Julieta Gil Brooke Phillips - Clovis, Calif.
