Before sophomore Lisa Holmes began attending Harding, people warned her, "Guys at Harding take the trash out more often than they take the girl s out." She now has a boyfriend whom she has been dating for almost a year, but many other women have voiced frustration. Men, on the other hand, often express weariness regarding the "Harding husband hunters." Whil e many of the rules to the dating game app ly un iversally, some are unique to Harding. For instance, everyone knows that "three swings means a ring. " But does three dates mean the same thing? Holmes said three or four dates are well wi thin the qualifications of "casual dating. " Junior Matt Clement had an experi - ence wi th a woman who apparently did not fee l the same way. "You go out once or twice with some of the girls here and they want to get marri ed," he said. "[ went out with one girl three or four times and she just assumed we were a couple and started talking about marriage." Holmes said she has fr iends who readily admit to being "Harding husband hunters." "[ had a fri end that said, 'I'm not here for a degree; I'm here to find a rich husband. '" Does a person have to be rich to afford to play the dating game? Many agreed that the most common date for students was bargain night at Searcy Cinema. Clement said the financial burden should fa ll on the mal e. "[ don 't think the girl should ever pay unless it's the guy's birthday or something," he said. Other common dates included trips to Little Rock for dinner and a movie, whi ch could easi ly cost $25. To pay for such outings Clements suggested that the male "work lots of jobs during the summer or just put it on the credit card." Senior Matt Prince sa id he preferred sqmething more original for a date. Hi s advicewas to "keep it simpl e and keep it in town, especiallyfor a first date. "He learned this lesson the hard way. One Saturday he planned a picnic and a movie. Since he was a little strapped for cash, when hi s date offered to pay for her own ti cket , he did not argue. "My friends told me later that [ should have insisted," he said. Dating has not always been so complicated. Before car dating was allowed, students walked to the Rialto to watch whatever flick was playing. The movie didn 't matter - it was a date off campus. Maybe it is easier to get some guys to take the trash out, and maybe some gi rls reall y are too eager for a ring.
