Road trips prove to be popular weekendgetaways The weekend brought many opportuniti es for Harding students, ranging from a night in Little Rock to a movi e in the Benson, but for some Harding students the weekend brought a chance to take a break from school and Searcy by taking a road trip. From Memphis to Dallas, Atlanta to LasVegas, Hardingstudentswou ld go anywhe re and everywhere to pursue the ultimate weekend road tr ip. Amongst the most frequently taken road trips was a weekend in Memphis. Many students went to Memphis because itwas close to campus and provided entertai nment venues and sight-seeing opportuni ti es that were not available in Searcy and surrounding areas.Activities in Memphis included soaking in the blues or jazz while walking along Beale Street, goi ng to theatrica l performances in the Orpheum, attending concerts or sporting events in the Pyramid, shopping, and of course, spendi ng a day at Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. Jun ior JeremySciba and somefriends took a weekend trip to Memphis in October. "We didn 't really have plans to go; we just decided we wanted to get away from campus for the weekend. We chose Memphis because it was close and would not require much money," Sciba said. The group dec ided to spend their Saturday touring Graceland. "It mi ght not have been the most exciting pl ace to go, but everyone has to go to Graceland at least once in their li fe," Sciba said. Another popular road trip during the year consisted of Harding students going to major league baseball games. With all of the excitement in St. Louis over Mark McGwire's homerun record-breaking and the Atlanta Braves' great season and playoff run, this year provided plenty of reasons for H~rding students to go to a game. Junior Ange la Cheng attended the playoff game between the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves in Atlanta. "Although I am a Cubs fan, I was thrilled to be able to go to Atlan ta and see my favo rite team, especially in the playoffs," Cheng sairl . "It was nice to get a break from school and take in the sights and sounds of a place other than Searcy." Aconcert in Boston, the French Quarter in New Orleans - these and other places provided fo r exc itingweekend getaways. One group of guys even suggested places and flipped a coin to determine their weekend destinations. Even though Harding provided many opportunities for students on campus, it was apparent that many students felt the need to get away from the pressures and stresses brought on from school by taking a weekend road trip. - Eric Barnes Chris Hinton - Shanksville.
