Should I lake a nap or finish my homework? , oj ~ , Junior James Benge takes a quick nap on the couch in the lounge ofthe business building. Some students only hada few minutes before or after classes /0 catch up on their rest while others had whole afternoons. One of the most coveted commodities to any coll ege student is agood night's sleep. Sleeping is something for whi ch college students never seem to schedule enough time. There is simply too much to do in a day to sleep. According to national surveys, the average coll ege student gets about six hours of sleep pe r night. For many students at Harding, that was an ideal that rarely was attained. Cl ub functions , intramural sports, dates, social time at local coffee houses or stores and other places took a significant amount of the evening hours. Of course, therewas also that thing some students did called studying, which usuallydidn't start until after curfew or as long as they could delay it. With curfew at 11 p.m., most people studied or socialized for about an hour after that so the earl iest most people got to sleep was midnight. "] usually don 't get to sleep until 12 or 1 o'clock," senior Becky Harp said, "and] usually only get about fi ve hours of sleep." Few people actually got ready for bed at curfew, and fewer still started studying at curfew. Mostspent timewith suitemates and other friends in the dorm, had devotional time or just relaxed after a busy day. "] always have intentions of getting to bed ea rly," Harp said, "but there is always something that keeps me up." The only thing that got one up in the morning was the alarm clock, which was set the night before in anticipation of pressing the snooze button four or fi ve times. After a quick shower, and a quicker breakfast (if any at all ), it was right back into another busy day. Sometimes, on days when lady luck was running rampant, a class was dismissed early or canceled altogether. This placed the student in a dilemma: "Do ] make use of my t ime constructively by studying, having fun with myfriends, com6leting an important task, or do ] go back to my room and sleep?" "I'd rather sleep than study," senior Jeremy Sanzone said, "especially if] have a test that day because I'd rather be awake during the test. " Everyone had to prioritize. After all, that's what life is about. But where did sleep fall in that hierarchy? That was the question left to the individual. No one could deny how a good nap made them feel, but they could never feel guilt free when they skipped class to take a nap. Whether it was a full night's sleep, sleeping in on the weekend or catching a quick power-nap during the week, the importance of sleep in a college student's life, though great, was often neglected in the interest of "li fe." - Remie Beaulieu Cheryl Gilbert - Paris.
