Gertie the ghost continues to hauntHarding Gertrude came home to Galloway College's Godden Hall from a party. She came inside after t el ling her date goodnight. She tried to be qui et so she woul d not wake her sleeping dormmates . Shewore a white evening gown and it swished as she walked down the hall to her room. She suddenly stopped and listened. She thought she heard something and headed toward the sound, whi ch had come from the abandoned elevator shaft. Suddenly, a scream echoed through Godden Hall. Gi rl s ran around in a pani c. Finally, the dorm mother call ed the police. They then discovered what had happened. Ge rtrude was found dead - at the bottom of the elevator shaft. Even in death Gertrude looked alive. Several years later, just before Galloway College closed, a freshman living in Godden Hall woke around midnight. As she walked down the hallway to get a drink, she noticed the moon was casting light on the hallway. She walked past the elevator shaft, peered through the boards and saw something. She ran down the hall and woke her roommate, "I could see her in the moon li ght!She was sitting there in a white evening gown combing her plati - num blonde hai r!" The roommate, also curious, wanted to see if Ge rti e was really there. She went down to the elevator shaft to have a look for herself. A freshman from up the hall fou nd the second roommate whisperi ng to herself, "She, she, she... wa lked right through the wa ll to the first floor! " The dean was called. She came to the dormitory and looked down the elevator shaft and said, "There's nothing down there except an old comb, you silly gir ls." When Harding moved to Ga lloway's campus in 1934, the legend of Gertie continued. Many rumors have circulated of people spotting Gertie in the old music building, whichwas builtwith bricks from Godden Hall after it was torn down. As coul d be expected, other stories grew out of the original legend, such as the one about the group of boys who, in trying to prove that Gertie did not exist, decided they would stay the night in the old music bui lding. They had securi ty lock them into the building. Before security left, they checked the building to make sure no one was hiding. After a whil e, they started to hear a pi ano playing, were frightened and ca ll ed securityto come and get them out. Before security arrived, theywenttoward the piano sounds and, as they neared, the playing stopped. People have also claimed to see Gertie looking out from the top window of the old music building, which is why, as the legend has it, the window is painted black. - Meredith Hlasta Ashley Chandler - Jacksonville.
