1998-1999 Yearbook

Grumpy oldmen provide chapel entertainment Photo by Seniors Marcus Neely and Pete Vann make a chapel announcement as the Grumpy OldMen. The two were frequently asked to make chapel announcements throughout the year because of their popularity with students. They are fun, entertaining and an integral part of chapel announcements . They are the Grumpy Old Men, and students love them. . The Grumpy Old Men have been around for quite some time. Pete Vann and Marcus Neelygrew up together. Their roles as Grumpy Old Men began in their church youth group. "It got started when wewere in hi gh school," Neelysaid. "When we wou ld go on youth group trips, we would have contests in the bus to see who could be the grumpiest old man. "The fun became an act and the two began to perform at youth ralli es. When they got to Harding, Neely and Vann performed for a few of their friends in chorus and their social club, and the word was out. "One night Terry Davis called us up at midnight and asked us ifwe would do some announcements for the next morning," Neely said. "We said yes, and that is where it all began." The two are not di scriminatory in what announcements they make. "People just call us and if we can, we say yes," Neely said. Students welcomed the Grumpy Old Men to chapel with open hearts and ready smil es. "[ think they are funny and they always make announcement day more interesting/' senior Brian Harmon said. "Funny" is certainly a popular response to their act. "I guess they are pretty funny," freshman Sarah Newman said. "Usually they are pretty good and entertaining," senior Jason Floding said. However, some students feel left out. "They are funny, but I don't like how they segregate the redheads because I am a blonde," freshman Martha McInteer said. "I do enjoy them when they are in chapel. They are fun ." One who often bears the brunt of the jokes is President David Burks, but he tijkes it all in stride, or does he? "They are crazy, they are idiotic, they use my name without my pe rmi ssion and they are a mess," Burks said. On a lighter note, "They add an unusual dimension for students; they are creative and talented," Burks said. "It's fine; I think they use my name in a presumab lygood manner. I never know what they are going to say, and that is what makes it so exciting." Students can look forward to at least one more year of the Grumpy Old Men. As to what will happen then, "Ask us in a year, " Nee ly said. Until then, students will continue to laugh and cheer as the Grumpy Old Men continue to tell of t imes past and how things were back in their day. "Making all of those people laugh - that is really the reason we do it, " Neely said. - Diane Grubbs Jeanette Baird - Wi lliford. Ark . Family and Consumer Sciences. OECE. Megan Barnett - Brentwood.
