1998-1999 Yearbook

During the first of two shows, comedian Bill Cosby entertains his audience with a story about dysfunctional families. Every seat was filled with students and faculty, as well as parents and other guests who came from all over the country to see one of Cosby's performances. Junior John Wheeler, sophomore Tommie Window and junior Sherrill McDaniel sort through and package books found near a house in storm-struck Beebe. More than 1,000 students volunteered to help the victims of the tornadoes that hit White County in January. Groups went to Beebe, McRae and the rural communities ofCenter Hill andFloyd. Dr. Jack Ryan introduces each of the 50 states and more than 40 countries represented at Harding as students from each location surround the front ofthe Benson Auditorium stage carrying the flag. The 1998-1999 schoolyear startedwith aspecial convocation ceremony in chapel that celebrated the beginning ofHarding 's 75th anniversary year. lEAVINGA ON THE PAST • Founders' Day was held on Sept. 28, 1999. Approximately 90 peop le, including alumni and their famil ies, attended a special chapel ceremony as Harding's founders and fi rs t students were remembered and honored. • On Feb. 16, the Arkansas Symphony performed in the Benson Auditorium. The orchestra was joined by more than 250 Harding singers to perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. • Harding initiated the DiamondAnniversary campaign in the fall. The five-year campaign, which had a goal of $150 million, received a boost with a $12 million pledge from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brackett. The donation was to be used to renovate and expand the Brackett Library. C LOS ING 327 •
