Jobs Provide Lessons in Management ofTime ... Senior DeShea Sullens checks out a customer at Hastings. Many students worked during the school year to help pay for school expenses that added up quickly. Many students at Harding chose to work off campus due to the small number of jobs on campus. Some considered it a wonderful opportunIty to make money in a change of atmosphere. Others, howeve r, considered working off campus a tiring activi ty because it took a lot of time from the ir studies and their bosses were not as sympathetic to that time needed to spend studying. Vicki Merchant was one student who thought that working off campus was a real challenge since she had many responsibilities at school. She used to work at the Gym Stars from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. "I had no choice but to work off campus,"Merchant said. "I needed every penny to afford all my expenses." Merchant worked 25 hours a week whil e taking 12 hours at school, which made it very hard and tiring for her everyday routine. "I had no social time," she said. When she returned from work, she would start studying. "I enjoy teaching gymnastics, but 1would rather have dedicated more time to school and made better grades to improve my GPA," Merchant said. Other students took a job off campus as an extra activi ty. Michele Bartolotta worked at Jade Garden, a Chinese restaurant. Bartolotta wanted to work to make spending money for extras like clothes and the movies. "At first it was hard to get used to, but working is becoming easier," Bartolotta said. Bartolotta's schedul e was Friday through Sunday from 4 to 9:30 p.m. The t ime she was working was tiring, but since it was on the weekends, she learned to combine her work schedule and her study for her classes. Megan Barnett, a senior, worked at Dillon's. She said her job made her more organized. .' "You really have to work on your schedule to be abl e to find time to study and spend time with friends ," she said. Some kept their jobs longer than others. "I was taking classes all summer long and needed a job to pay for a trip to Europe. That is a lot of the reason why 1 amworking throughoutthe schoolyear," Barnett said. Many quit their jobs in the middle of the semester because it was more than they could handle, but more often they stayed with it. "I had a really hard time trying to adjust to this schedule because 1was so busy anyway, but 1really think it has helped me in more ways than most wou ld th ink. "I have learned so much about patience and good organization that 1 believe 1could adequately face almost any business situation," Barnett said. - Juli eta Gil Chris Mirante . Natnick, 1>1ass.
