Just the word "registrar" evokes images of piles of paperwork to be compl e ted and computer screens demanding social security numbers and cafeteria bar codes. Many would be surprised, then, to know that Harding's assistant registrar, Wayne Milner, is a "people person" and considers contact with students the most enjoyable and rewarding part of his job. After graduating from high school, Milner attended Arkansas State University at Jonesboro, but he said he did not enjoy it. He left college ea rly to enter the workplace, and it was not until 15 years later that he came to Harding. He graduated from Harding in 1987 with a degree in Compute r Information Systems and began working as Harding's director of computer training. Six months later, he was offered the position of assistant registrar. "It was a job I had nevereven considered, so I asked Ron Finley to give me a wh il e to think about it. I came back three or four days later and said I would take the job. It was probably the best move r have ever made in 11M 88 Academics my life," he said. Milner's main responsibility as assistant registrar is working with students who are nearing graduation. When they submit a request for degree, he performs a degree audit to determine whether the student has fulfilled the graduation requi rements of his o r her major. "The majo ri ty of the time, the answer is 'yes.' A few students have not met all the requirements, and I ca ll them into my office to talk abou t the problem, which can often be resolved. The cases where we can't resolve the problem are disappointing for me . It hurts me to have students leave my office upset or crying because they can 't graduate when they want to, " he said. Th e Reg is tra r 's Office has undergone some changes in the past two years that have made advising, schedu ling and graduation easier for the offi ce, teachers and students. "Last year, we had 20 to 25 advisers doing computerized preregistration. It was a very successfu l trial. The program was well written. This year, all adv isers are using the computerized system, and it has taken a load off of our office," Milne r said. Other changes that are now in process will continue to makeMilner's job easier and allow him more time for personal contact with students. "Our office computer system is being revamped, and the computer people are doing a fantastic job. They're also worki ng on putting transcripts on the computer so they don 't have to be stored in vaults," he said. Besides his work with Harding students,Milner is involved in serving many other people. He assists his wife,Jan, with her work, leaving at 5 a.m. three Sa turdays out of each month to pick up students from surroundi ng counties to attend Upwa rd Bound . Jan is the services coordina tor for the Upward Bound program, which brings in high school students whose parents did not comple te a coll ege degree, and provides Saturday tu toring at Harding and a six-week residential program in the summer. Milner and his wife also work with the College Church ofChrist's "Senior Servants," the over-60s group. The Milne rs have two children-a daughter who graduated from Harding and a so n who is curre ntl y s tudying computer science here. As computerization continues to make the registrar's task easier, Milner and other members of Ha rd ing's staff will have more time to dedicate to personal interaction with students. - Wendi Keller
