Harding received a S750,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation of Troy, Mich., in September to partially fund a 12 ,000-square-foot addition to the Mildred Taylor Stevens Art Center. The renovation began in November. Do n Robinson , chair of the department, said the construction should be completed in time to be dedicated during the University's 75th anniversaty yea r. The new building includes three art galleries, a computer graphics lab, a graphic arts srudio, 10 faculty studios and an interior design resource storage area. The department had been at the top of the priority list fo r renovation when the Reynolds Cente r was funded , but members opted to remain near the center of campus. "\Y/e were gratefu l to get to stay in our original. location," Robinson sa id. "The building is in a central locat ion for visitors, faculty and students." The two main ga ll eri es in the renovated building are on the first floor , with a divider to allow for simultaneous srudem art shows or one larger special display. The second floor has a mini-ga ll ery to display Harding's permanent collection. "The gallery space will more than double the previous ga llery," Ro binson said. The structure that previously housed the art ga ll ery had to be razed to make room for the renovation. The house had stood o n the campus t1iil Academi cs 64 since 1941 and was President George S. Benson's home until 1965. Art Instructor Beverly Austin and her Drawing 103 students sketched thei r impress ions of the building before it was torn down and of the addition as it was being constructed . "I am thrilled about the new state-ofthe-a rt building, " Austin said. "This is progress that is good for everyone." - Robin Henson .Kinesiology Moving imo a new position can be a harrowing experience for many in the professional world , but it can also be an eXCiting and rewarding time, as was the case with Harding University's new athleti c director, Greg Harnden. After serving Harding University for eight years as head women's basketba ll coach and last yea r as assistam athletic director, Harnden moved into hisnew posi tion thi syear afterthe retirement o fDr. Ted Altman . To assume the position of athle ti c director , Harnden had to pass his coaching responsibilities down to last yea r's assistant coach, Brad Francis. Al though Harnden was very pleased with his new position, it was difficult to leave coaching. "It was hard to give up coaching, but what I will miss the most is the relationships that I built with my players ," he sa id. Sophomore Molly McPherson, a member of the Lady Bisons basketball team, said, "We know Coach Francis pretty well , but it's still different not The Stevens Art Gallery, which had housed senior art shows, had its final display in. " Harnden's new responsibilities accompanied the University's first year of full membe rship in the Lone Star Conference. "The new conference brought about a lot o f change," he said. "With the move from NAJA to NCAA Division II, we went to a bigger, better, stronger conference and nationa l affiliation. It's a great challenge for all o ur athleti c teams. " Harnden was full of praise for those who work alongside him in the athl etic department. "I want people to know what kind of staff we have, not only as coaches but as people in church and in the community," Harnden said. "They a re always looking for a place to serve.
