The Bisons went into the '97 season fa cing their toughest schedule ever , including games against Central Missouri State and Wisconsin! Oshkosh. With a bright but young pitching staff, they expected to win many games, but the results were not quite what they had p lanned. Finishing w ith a 19-28-1 record, six wins out o f their last 10 games he lped them make it into the tournament. In national competition, the Bisons de feated Lyon College in the first round but lost to them in a close game to finish the tournament at 2-2. "We finished the season with a good reaction to some tough times. The guys displayed great heart. I was very proud of our players ' heart and determination," Coach Shane Fullerton said. Lack of leadership had a lotto do with the team's tough season . Tim Lacefie ld , who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays at the end of the season , was the only senior on the team. This opened the door for some of the younger players to take on more leadership. "Several of us on the tealTI had [0 step up," Junior Jeremy Pharr said. "David , Rampey, Ryan Tharp and i were a few who assumed the team leadership. I felt that we all did a great job of stepping up and leading the team when things got tough. We had a tough middle of the season and we got down but, once we got to the tournament, we came up big and e nded the season strong. " The Bisons' up-and-down season experie nced some tough losses and some great victories, including two wins aga inst Southeast Missouri Sta te. "We played consiste ntly tougher teams this season. We beat some teams that we will be playing in the Lone Star Conference. We p layed well at times. We beat Southeast, then turned around the next game and lost 12-0. That is what's frustrating about the season, but we can 't dwell on that ," Fullerton said. Junior Ryan Tharp said he felt the team motivated one another to ge t through the season. "There was a time when everybody was down and we had to pump each other up, and that gave us the motivation heading into the tournan1ent ," he said. "We did what we had to do. " Harding scored 22 runs in two separate games during the season , which showed their hitting capabilities. "Scoring 22 runs is nice, but it's just another game. One day we trounce someone, then the next day we get beat. I want our team to work hard day in and day o ut ," Fullerton said. The Bisons expect a good '98 season , with a good crop of incoming p layers . - Heath Dawson Baseball First Row: Shane Pharr, josh Moore, Charley Moore, Brent Long, Troy \'(Io/fe, jeffHernandez, Aaron Mitchell, Richard Cummings, jeremy Pharr, Gary Bull, Ron Lightfoot, Pal Lightfoot, Second Row: Nate Lincoln, Coach ShaneFullenon, Ryan 7barp,josh BostiC, Nathanael \'(IatsoH, Ryan Smith, Aaron Brister, Ryan Rana, Tim Lacefield, Chris Shelby, David Rampey, Bentley Herrell, Randy Bostic.
