Fo r most freshme n , the 199798 school year was the first timeth at they had lived away from home . Many stu dents welcomed the exciting o ppo rtunity to fina ll y be o n the ir own. Othe rs were weary o f the pressures a nd some times even d oubted tha t the yea rs ahead of them would actua lly be th e best yea rs of the ir lives. The fear o f the unknown caused man y freshme n to fa ll v ic tim to h om es ickness during the ir f i rst semeste r of college. Fo r 18 and mayb e 19 yea rs o f the ir lives, Mom and Dad had been there to make sure that they had e no ugh food , tha t the ir clothes were clean , and to lend financial support whenever it was needed . Freshman Arle ne Camacho from Q ueretaro, M exico, was not able to go home even at Christmas b reak . ''I'm sad tha t I didn 't get to see my family until this summe r , but I think maybe it's be tte r this way. If I had gone home fo r Chris tmas, I would have be en even more sad to leave my family and come back to Ha rding," she said.
