An alumnus, McLean visitedHarding because he was having an operation in Houston and still needed money due to the high costs ofsurgery . Most collegestudents have a limited budget to spend on extra meals and activities on the weekend. During an interviewwithMcLean in chapel, Dr. Authur Shearin challenged students to give the money it would usually cost to eat out to help with the surgery. Students, faculty and staff came together to give almost $30, 000 out oftheir hearts and pockets for McLean 's surgery .
