Finishing in four years is a challenge for seniors Although receiving a college d ipl oma is gene rall y thought of as the culmination of four yea rs of hard wo rk and dedication, it cannot always be done in that time. Many students declare a major early but change their imerest and their major one or more times. She llie Salza, a fifth year senior at Harding, will graduate with a degree in public relations, but she ente red college with the intention of pursuing a degree that would lead he r to medical school. Three semesters into college, however, Salza decided that med icine was not for her. Although the change extended Salza's stay another yea r, she said, "I don't feel like 1 have wasted my time here. 1have found the curriculum very flexible." Curriculum was often the reason for a five-year stay at a univerSity. Spencer Ouo experienced first-hand the challenges of fit ting a demanding major such as biochemistry into four years. "I wasn't aware that certain classes were only offered during certain semesters," he said . Scheduling conflicts similar to those experienced by Otto are occurring in universities all across the United States. According to Mike Zapler of the Chron icle of Higher Education, many universities are reducing the requirements to he lp students fi nish soone r. Registrar Ron Finley said that lowering requirements are not an option for Harding. "Al though we try to keep our requiremems to a minimum, there are certain majors that simply require more of a student. " Cutting required classes, according to Finley, would result in the students' loss of valuable education. "We have always had a strong general education program, and we plan to continue that," he said. Senio r Sharon Powell had a unique reason for staying in college longer than p lanned . Entering as a freshman , Powell spent two yea rs at Harding ~nd, in that time, married. An unexpected pregnancy led her Sean Dawson - Sulphur Sprins:s. Ark . .Ilmwgerl(l/ ACCou llfillg.
