CAMARADERIE Club functions strengthen friendships among members Social clubs at Harding provided opportunities for many special relationships among students, and club activities created a special sense of camaraderie. Whether through funct ions, Spring Sing or club sports, time spent together increased the upity within a club. Most social clubs had two functions each semester. These functions traditionally included a fa ll hayride, a Christmas party and a spring banquet, but many clubs added thei r own flavor to social events. Senior Kate Major, pres ident of Ch i Omega Pi, said, "OUf functions are fun because we have lots of theme parties, and it is always interesting to see what people choose to dress up as. " Functions also provided an opportunity for the entire club to relax and enjoy one another's company. Major said, "Our membership is so diversified; that's what makes OUf functions specia l. We're all together, enDID YOU KNOW? Ka Re Ta, formed in 1979with 45 members, is the only club on campus with an Aramaic name. It means "Son - Soul - Cross ." joying and accepting one another. " TNT had one da teless function each semester, for club members only. Junior Philip Murphy said, "Ou r club emphas izes brotherhood, so we have two 'stag' pa lties a year just to hang out and p lay sports. It's important to be close." Functions were also a chance for the new members to get involved after the induction process. Freshman Shantih member Jessica Krinks said, "Our functions have a fun atmosphere, and they gave me a chance to be with older members and get to know them bener." Many clubs were not limited by just having a hayride. One club on campus had a fall tradition unlike any other. "Each year we have a cook-off between the guys in the club. We all judge each other's recipe and declare a winner, " Matthew Miller, president of Alpha Tau Epsilon, said. (continued on page 104...) Social Clubs 103 f&J
