Prayer Box is daily reminder One of the Student Association's goals this year was to make prayer a more active part ofstudents' lives. SApresident Zach Steed said that he and Spritual Life director, Andrew Baker, wanted prayer to be an important part of the year. "We wanted people to know that it is powerful and effective, and we wanted everyone involved, " Steed said. As part of this goal, they made the Prayer Box a visible part of chapel each day. which numbered more than 1,700 the first semester, were confidential. At the beginning ofeach semester, Steed and Baker asked students to write a prayer request during chapel. These were collected, sealed in a wooden box and placed near the podium to serve as a reminder of the requests. The SA then mailed the cards back to the students and faculty at the end of the semester. The SA wanted students to be affected in one of two ways when they received their requests back. "Either they saw it and realized that their prayer had been answered and were encouraged, or they realized that they did not pray for their request as they should have. We're hoping that, if the latter was true, they were encouraged to start praying then," Steed said. With the Prayer Box's help, the SA focused the student body's attention on a key scripture: "The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective" (James 5:16). - Sara VanRheenen "The requests were mentioned to God indirectly every day," Steed said, by "indirectly," meaning that they were referred to as a whole.
