Tidiness is a source of tension for roommates For many students, life in college meant gaining a new sibling - a roommate. Although he or she may have turned out to be a best friend , roommates still struggled to compromise and allow for differences. In a small dorm room, students had to learn to adjust to each other's habits. Dealingwith the differences between neat and tidy students and messy and carefree ones was a concern of roommates. Sophomores Sarah Blackwell and Michelle Gibson were suitemates. Blackwell said she believed in living comfortably. "I like to feel at home; if everything is neat, then you can't touch anything," Blackwell said. Gibson, however, believed that tidiness was the key to success . "You have this limited amount of space to live in and to study. If you come into a messy room, you just don't want to be there," Gibson said. Living with each other's style sometimes created conflicts. "She cleans and puts my papers where I can't find them! " Blackwell said. "I leave for the weekend and come back and the whole room is rearranged. " Gibson complained, "She goes to bed at night and just wants to leave her clothes on the floor; she just says she's tired and doesn 't want to walk to the hamper." Off-campus students often faced bigger problems. Seniors Jason Brubaker, Ben Briscoe, and Keith Evans shared an apartment. They also shared the daily chores of doing dishes and taking out the trash. Briscoe and Evans believed in keeping things clean while Brubaker was a mess-maker. "He has left ravioli in a pan all day. When it's his turn to do the dishes , they are towering in the sink," Evans said. Brubaker defended himself, saying, "It's just easy to be messy. It's too stressful to think about picking up after yourself. " His response to his roommates' complaints was , "It just makes me want to be messier so I can rebel against them." Roommates realized that compromise was the essential solution to living together . "Even though I don't want to pick up my clothes at night, I feel bad sometimes, and I agreed to be cleaner when we moved in together,'' Blackwell said. Brubaker also compromised with his roommates. "When they ask me specifically to do something, I'll do it," he said. In the end, it was usually the messy roommate who had to become a little cleaner so that all could be happy with the situation. - Darcia Woodard Andrea Mille r - Richfield, Minn. Missions.
