Wh ile short road trip s to Little Rock orMemphis meant packing a few snacks and some favorite tapes or CD's, longer trips often required more extensive packing . Photo by Aaron Gillihan. The desire to be "going somewhere" was a driving force for many students and resulted in much time spent on the highway in both planned and spontaneous road trips. For students who lived far away, just going home was a major road trip. Senior Tamar Hemmerich had to brave snow storms and crowded cars to get to her home in Albany, N.Y. "One time, four people came home with me in my Toyota Tercel ," she said. "I told them to bring only the essentials , but this one guy brought a guitar! It stayed between him and this other guy in the back seat during the whole trip. They couldn't even see each other because of it. " Even if they were not headed home, students often enjoyed just getting out of town. Freshman Leah Chaney said that road trips were a good way to escape the pressures of school. "When I am away, I don't have to worry about things like who has a date for the weekend and who doesn't . It's kind of nice to be able to go to a town where you don't see someone you know every place you go ." "You feel so independent when you're on a road trip," Hemmerich said. "You can stop at a tee-pee trading post if you want, just to see what kind of stuff they have. It's nice to forget that you go to school , even if it is just for two days. " Freshman Olivia Eddins went to Branson several times this year to shop at outlet malls. "We were able to save money on clothes and have a good time, " she said. Athletes had many opportunities to travel to away games. "On the way there we would talk about the team we're going to play and their best guys. But we also got to talk to and spend time with our teammates off the field," sophomore baseball player Gary Bull said. "We tried not to go to sleep. When people went to sleep, we messed with them. " Supportive fans also made many road trips. Senior Jody Rhoten was an avid follower of the football team because her fiancee, DannyAllison, played. "It was his last year to play, and I really wanted to be there for all ofthe games," she said. Rhoten made her trips with wives ofother football players , and not all their excursions were completely uneventful. "We had no clue where we were going when we went for the Tahlequah game. We tried to read the map as best as we could along the way, but we made some detours." Whatever their reason for hitting the highway, students enjoyed road trips. - Sara VanRheenen K enneth L aws - Lincoln, Neb. History. Transfer (University of Nebr aska). Chi Sigma Alpha.
