Journal of a new student Whether experiencing college for the first time, transferring from other universities, or returning from international programs like HUF, second semester students had to learn or re-learn a little about Harding. If each had kept a journal, they probably would have recorded experiences and emotions similar to those Carolina Barreto, a freshman from Recife, Brazil, expressed during her first semester at Harding. Nothing was as important as making friends. Here at Harding, people made us feel welcome, not just as visitors, but as new members of the Harding family. The teachers' dedication to be accessible to us made us feel that, although we had just arrived, we were not too far behind. The faculty and staff treated us each as individuals and yet helped us with the process of fitting in. As other students were shouting "Hello! " across campus and telling news about Christmas break, we were introducing ourselves and making new friends. We missed the whole induction process; we didn't get to attend mixers or join a club. During the first few days, what was routine for others was absolutely new to us. Getting lost on campus was part of our everyday schedule. But we made it! After a few mistakes, we learned the cafeteria's hours and our seats in chapel. The fact that Hardinghas such different students, from all 50 states and so many other countries, helped us feel comfortable in our new environment.
