1996-1997 Yearbook

Cutting corners could mean cutting hair This year, students cut more than class; they cut hair. "Bad hair days" caused many tears, tardies and, in extreme cases, absences. Students had reason for hope, however, as several fellow students were giving the salons a run for their money. Senior Shannon O'Neil is a licensed beautician. Before coming to Harding, she worked in a salon in her hometown. O'Neil did not want to cut hair when she first came to Harding. "Back home people would ask me to cut their hair outside ofwork and it became a hassle because it seemed that work was never over," she said However, after cutting her roommate's hair, O'Neil decided that cutting hair would be a good idea for earning extra money. A reasonable price may have been the initial reason that students sought out O'Neil, but good Curtis Warden cuts his roommate Ryan Singleton's hair. Those students who were fortunate enough to know an amateur barber or beautician - or, better yet, a licensed one - did not have to spend as much to look good. Photo by Jeff Fall. service kept them coming back. O'Neil laughed at the idea ofadvertising. "People find out by word of mouth," she said. Sophomore Janna Shera said that cutting hair is fun, but she has no desire to pursue a career in a salon. "I just cut my friends' hair," she said. "Of course, I don't make the promise of perfection, but it's their choice." Girls were not the only ones whowanted to be beautiful on a limited budget. Guys did all they could to look good and make ends meet as well. Aaron Lowe said, "We have to do all we can to save money. I'd rather have a bad hair cut and a cool date than a cool hair cut and no date." Sophomore Curtis Warden said, "I never said that I was good at cutting hair; I just cut hair for free. It doesn't matter what it looks like; the point is, it is cut." If they spotted bald patches or uneven trims while walking across campus, students just smiled and knew the wearer was supporting a fellow student and saving money at the same time. - Rebecca West Lance Morgan - Cooper City, Fla.
