Barnett treasures place as part ofHarding family Whether visible or behind the scenes, each member of the Harding community is essential to its functioning. Harding depends on people who are willing to give to a cause bigger than themselves. "Every person from the president of the university to the man who collects the garbage is important. Each person has a job to do that is just as important as the guy before him," Marcus Barnett, custodian in the Benson Auditorium, said while discussing his place in the Harding family. Barnett's greatest experience was becoming a Christian, he said. Jimmy Allen was holding a meeting during which Barnett responded to the invitation. "My mother was mainly responsible for my decision," he said. It was during a singles retreat at Camp Wyldewood that he met his wife, Jeanne. They have one grown daughter who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. The changes he has seen over the years are what Barnett remembers about Harding. "The student center, the new Bible building - they just came along recently. I've seen so many changes. I'm glad I got to be a part of that. " Barnett loves his job and appreciates his student workers. "This year, I have the best team I've ever had. Awhile back, I was sick, and it was like I wasn 't even gone, " he said. His respect for his student employees is evident as he speaks about them. "You have to remember that they are still students. Sometimes their other responsibilities get in the way. You just have to understand that. " For young people, Barnett advised, "Don't let desire for a career and money get in the way of your family. Too many families are together and just existing. The American dream has gotten in the way of what 's important.
