With so much to do, no one asks ... What's Happening Concerts, carnivals, special performances and service projects described this year's wide range of activities on the Harding campus. The year began with an S.A.-sponsored watermelon party and comedian Jeff Dunham and his side-kick, Peanut. Another special event was the carnival on the front lawn, sponsored by ARAMARK, giving students a chance to get out of the cafeteria and eat outdoors without any additional cost. This year, students were able to cheer for their own car, bought by the S.A. as a fundraiser, in the demolition derby at the White County Fair. After the fair , students went back to help clean the fairgrounds as a service project. Concerts with Billy Dean, Sawyer Brown, the Falwell Sisters, Acappella and Diamond Rio also entertained students. "Billy Dean was my favorite ," Terry Davis said, "because he was so down to earth." Other musical guests included a Billy Joel impersonator. Harding students were also able to participate in the All-School Retreat with guest speaker Willie Franklin, who spoke in chapel the morning before the retreat. For the first time, Harding students participated this year in Midnight Madness, the official start of basketball season. To encourage participation, monetary prizes were given to the clubs with the best posters and most participation. During Midnight Madness, one lucky student, Derek Garrett, received the chance at a half-tuition scholarship for one semester if he could make a shot from half court. Unfortunately, he narrowly missed. During the spring semester, students were treated to spring flings, a time when games such as kirk, riding the Gyro (a gyroscope), and a bungy run were brought to campus. Along with these activities, Harding students participated in various service projects. These service projects included a talent show that raised money for Antigua, a day when students collected canned products for a food bank in Little Rock, and an Inner City Carnival both semesters. According to Sorrell, there was a greater focus on increasing school spirit and getting students more involved with the community this year. - Alyne Hoover MarkMiller ofSawyerBrown croons for theHarding crowdduringa fall semesterconcert.
