A Glimpse of College For seasoned college veterans, the passing of time during a semester is marked by different events. First comes Student Impact, with scores of freshmen arriving on campus. Registration and buying books leave their mark, and the semester is off and running. Soon, everything settles into a routine, and before you know it, mid-terms are here. Then, it happens. It starts quietly and slowly builds to a dull roar, and they come! From every direction, high school kids with their sleeping bags and pillows make their way onto campus for a glimpse of the Harding experience. High school days, this year known as Insight '95, came and went with a bang. Planning for the big weekend began a year in advance. This year, due to a few scheduling problems, Insightwas moved to theweekend before Homecoming, which gave the admissions office approximately six months to plan, according to Mike Williams, director. "This is a big promotional weekend. We encourage visitors to come and attend classes, take tours, go to chapel, etc.," Williams said. The estimated number for Insight '95 was around 200, but Williams said they never have a total count because not everyone registers. Many prospective students arrived Thursday night. The main activities did not begin until Saturday with the football game against SouthernArkansas University and theAcappella concert. Friday, visitors had the opportunity to visit classes and meet Harding students. "We plan many weekends throughout the course of the year because, if they visit, they are more likely to come to Harding. They get to really experience Harding," Williams said. Important to the admissions office is that the prospective students meet the Harding students. For this reason, the campus tours are conducted by university students, and high school students usually stay in the dorms. "The more we can showcase Harding students, the more likely the prospective students are to come to Harding, " Williams said. The academic fair on Saturday gave prospects the chance to talk to faculty members of various departments. Janet Foster, a high school senior from Fayetteville, Ark. enjoyed Friday night's activities with Glorify Him and the Conquerors. She suggested more acitivies for Friday night because not all groups stay all day Saturday. "Chapel was neat because everyone was there. It's rare that you see so many people come together. It made me want to be a part of it," she said. Allison Wray, another high school senior from Fayetteville, said, "I've been down here a lot; it's a good atmosphere. I think I could have fun here! My favorite part was the devo. I only wish I could have met more people." - Beth Smith Michelle Browne and Kenny Collins croon during a Youth Forum Belles and Beaux concert.
