Pre-professional organization hosts events with local and state-wide significance •FCSSS members provide leadership through seminars and service projects With the state president and the state convention being in Searcy, the Family and Consumer Science Student Section (FCSSS) kept busy this year. Julie Crockett was president of both the Harding chapter and the Arkansas chapter of th~ club. The club, along with Harding, hosted the Arkansas Family and Consumer Science Convention in the spring. The club started the year with a banana split social to get acquainted. Next, they hosted the State Leadership Conference in October. There were representatives from six universities, totaling about 80 people. Club sponsor Sharen Crockett described the conference as "wonderful " and "very positive." The club finished the semester with a Christmas party and a service project to collect Christmas gifts for children. Also, during both semesters several guest speakers addressed the association. One was a panel of family and consumer science teachers from across the state. The three teachers on the panel had varying experience: one was a new teacher, one a teacher of about 10 years and one had been teaching more than 30 years. "They shared positive and negative aspects with the students. The one thing that they stressed was that it was rewarding to see their students get help. It was rewarding enough for them to continue what they do, " Mrs. Crockett said. In the spring, the club hosted the state professional division convention. Approximately 200 professionals and pre-professionals attended, and students worked hard to make the program a success. "We had a few students who worked hard in the fall and spring to host both state events. We appreciate the work that they did, " Mrs. Crockett said. Crockett said that the organization helped prepare students for and keep them informed about their future profession. Giving an example, her daughter Julie, said, "Being a part of this pre-professional organization at the local and state levels gave me a better sense of what it means to be a professional, and it opened doors for new opportunities." Mrs. Crockett also worked with the organization on the state and local levels and found it to be much work, yet beneficial. "There is a lot of work as a state and local adviser. I see the benefits in what the students gain. They gain experi ence while they are involved in a pre-professional organization. That is why I work with them and enjoy it. " The Family and Consumer Science Student Section, a new name for the group, reflects the club mission to help families and individuals live more productive and satisfying lives. - Holly Latimer Family and Consumer Science Student Section.
