Cmnpus leaders encouraged to succeed and to develop stewardship qualities •National leadership honor society widens its circle to include Harding University Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), Harding's newest honor society, inducted members for the first time in the spring of 1995. ODK is a nationally renowned society recognizing and encouraging achievement in scholarship, athletics, campus or community service, social and religious activities, campus government, journalism, speech and the mass media, and creative and performing arts. The national president of the society, Richard Hoover of the University of Nebraska, assisted in the charter ceremony by inducting the new members. Serving as faculty secretary, Dr. Michael James said, "Omicron Delta is unique at Harding because it is comprised of faculty as well as students." James was a member of the Florida State University circle while finishing his doctoral work. The Harding circle of ODK emphasizes leadership through service. Joseph Walker, president of the Harding circle, said, "We want to be leadership models leading like Christ did; He reflected leadership through His service. " Walker hopes to make the Harding Omicron circle unique by helping it to achieve a servant attitude. ODK held a leadership conference in the spring consisting of a weekend with local leaders telling how they attained their positions and sharing their views and philosophies on leadership. Speakers included David Evans, mayor of Searcy; Dr. David Burks; Dean Cathleen Shultz and Dr. Bob Reely. Another aspect of the weekend included breaking into groups for problem solving. The members were presented problems which they had to work through together. From this, the groups discussed who led and how and what worked best. "I definitely benefited, not only from the people, but also from the experience," Walker said of the weekend conference. He also spoke of how much the speakers taught him. "I was able to see that it is not 'unchristian ' to say someone is successful. " Many members graduated at the close of the first semester, leaving five active student members at the opening of the spring semester. New inductees were nominated by members and invited to be a part of the society. Nominations are also taken from the deans and other faculty members. During the fall, 12 members were added to the society. Omicron Delta Kappa was founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., by 15 student and faculty leaders. The founders had the idea that leadership of exceptional quality in college should be recognized, that representatives in all phases of college life should cooperate in a worthwhile task, and that outstanding students and faculty should meet on a basis of mutual interest, understanding and helpfulness. - Shellie Morris Omicron Delta.
