Memphis Lord, Give Me Strength: Graduate student Chris Collett reaches out to troubled children in the Searcy area Dealingwith studentswith academicproblems all day and doing graduate study at night kept Chris Collett busy most of the time. Collett, a graduate student, pursued a secondary education administration degree at night while spending the day working at the Riverview School District Strive Center. "The Strive Center is an alternative learning environment program which allows high school students who have dropped out, failed, fallen behind or been held back to come in and make up all lost credit in one year," Collett said. Collett decided to pursue a graduate degree because he hoped one day to work as a principal and also to make more money. He said the education which he received at Harding in undergraduate studies provided him with many of the facts he needed to know before teaching. "Until you step into a class, you don't know it all. In the classroom, you gain a lot of hands-on training." Collett did his student teaching at Riverview School District and so impressed the teachers and administrators with his ability to discipline that they asked him to be in charge of the Strive Center, which was laden with behavioral problems. "My job when I first started was to solve discipline problems and get the class running smoothly.
