This year, Hardingwas graced with the presence of at least two groups that offered a variety of music but were not official representatives of the school: "The Firemen" and "The Dave Beyers Music Group. " "The Firemen" was an all-vocal group consisting of five Harding students who sought to share the gospel of Jesus through song. After Rick Castleman, Matt Schmitz, Henry McDaniel, Shane Jackson and Brian Fuller joined together in 1994, "The Firemen" brought what Fuller described as their "upbeat, contemporary" sound primarily to churches in Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana and Texas. According to Fuller, one distinguishing feature of "The Firemen" was that its members interactedwith the audience before their performances. "When we do concerts, we don 't like to simply perform and then leave - we like to get to each destination several hours or even a day early so we can interact with the youth, letting them know that we are real people like them, and that Christianity can be fun," Fuller said. Outside of the a cappella genre was "The Dave Beyers Music Group," a bandwhichwas founded, produced and promoted by junior Dave Beyers. "The musical style ofour group is purposefully hard to categorize because we try to incorporate different styles and different sounds into the music," Beyers said. Beyers' group consisted of Misty McDowell, Stacey Randolph, Nate Lucas, Natasha Tomasi, Jim Raines, Ryan Scott, David White and Beyers. With the dream of becoming professional performers, Beyers revealed the motivation behind their goal. "God has given us talents, and we desire to use them to make money not only to earn a living, but also to help other people whenever possible." These students worked to keep their focus on why and for whom they are pursuing these musical careers. - Michael Carter Eddie Koehler - El Cajon, Calif. Jeff Krinks - Richwood, N.J.
