Seniors While en route to a track meet, Heather Allison drove past a herd of bison, which still roam the fields of certain parts of Arkansas and have played an important role in the history of Harding. According to Dr. Clifton Ganus, the bison was first affiliated with the school in 1926, when the school was still in Morrilton. "In 1925, a football team was startedat theMorrilton campus,"Dr. Ganus said. "When it began, it was just called the Harding College football team. Then in 1926, the football team was given the name 'Bisons, 'because ofthe great herds ofbison in the area." In the 1927 Petit Jean, the football team used a picture of a bison as the background for its photograph. The name trickled down to the school newspaper. "The newspaper was first called the Skeeter," Dr. Ganus said. ''About the same time that the football team was given the nameBisons, the paper changed its name to The Bison."
