Entrepeneurs: Ambition ... devotion ... an idea ... that's what it takes to start a business. As a student, the drive to work for yourself might be found after a semester of work-study in the cafeteria. Or maybe the cash flow has been cut off from mom and dad. Whatever the reason, some students at Harding decided that being an entrepreneur was the path they would take to raise their necessary funds. Brian Snow, a senior math major, became involved in a network marketing company called Excel, a national long-distance telephone company. Snow worked an average of 12 hours each week and lived on the income. He found his schedule more flexible than if he were working a regular job. "I used to work in a restaurant and had to work around school. With Excel, I work when I want to, " he said. This did mean that Snow had to be more motivated to work without someone telling him what to do. "Starting any business takes self-motivation and independence," he said. Snow stayed motivated because he had a goal in mind. He wanted to have a secure Cheryl Graham -Tulsa, Okla. Special/Elementary Education. De lta Gamma Rho. "I will be able to do all this with Excel because I continue to get paid in the future for the work I do today. Every time a customer picks up the phone, I make money." Fellow student entrepeneur Stacy Ferrell started his own lawn mowing business in July, 1995. He invested about $1300 to begin, but he made about $400 a week during the summer. "Not only did I make a $1600 to $1700 return on my investment, Iwas able to make enough money for school this fall. I still have some of my clients left, so I can continue to make money for the rest of the year," he said. Ferrell was motivated to mow lawns so that he could make more than minimum wage. "I can make more than what an employer can pay and still pay my bills. Of course, " Ferrell said, "even if your business isn't successful, remember that the experience is well worth it.
