The ir goa l w as to d .ve lop fitness programs fo r as tronaut s b y us ing Harding s tudents fo r researc l1. The direct result for Harding s tudent s w as a course s im ilar 10 the p rogram fo rmed for NASA. "We decided w e w ould c rea te a course from the researc l1 ," Corb in sa id . Introduc tion to Phys ica l Activit y b gan as a two-hour e lec ti ve c lass in I 9 79. When Harding made it a required one-ho ur course fo r all s tudent s in 1984 , it w as renamed Introduc tion to Wellness. "'Harding w as one o f the firs t schools to o ffe r a phys ica l ac tivities concept course... Corbin sa id. And although it w as o ri g inall y designed to promo te physica l fitness and a healthy lifes ty le . Kinesi o logy 1o1 has s ince integra ted all aspects o f w e llness. Bes ides the obvio us p hysica l ac tiviti es needed to achieve to tal we llness. spirit ual. in te llectual. emo tional and soc ial aspects w ere added fo r a healthy ba lance. By teacl1ing these fi ve ca tegories o f a hea ltl1y lifes ty le. the c rea to rs o f the c lass hoped healthy liv ing w ould become a w ay o f life fo r g raduates o f Harding. ·w e've tried to mo tiva te student s ... Corbin sa id . The course ha mo tivated no t only Harding student s, but has also influenced o ther s l1ools to add suc l1 c lasses . Harding provided them with info rmation , and they then des igned similar prog rams . Harding w as already a leade r in the pll)'sica l educa tion department ..;At one time. w e had the finest equipped phys io logy exerc ise program in the South ," Corbin said .
