Family Values One of the greatest achievements in the hi s to ry o f Ame ri can Srudi s was its persuasion of forme r Vi ce President Dan Quay le ro participate in the 1993-94 lec ture series. Quayl e addressed a capacity crowd April 14 , disc ussing topics which ranged from parenthood to nuc lear w apons. After his introduc tion by Pres ident David Burks and the enrhusias ti applause of the crowd, Quayle m ade a statement that set the mood for the ev ening. "With nthusiasm like tha t. how did I lose the e lection ," h said. Quayl e's thoughts on family values drew a widely concurring response from the audience. "His sense of values w ere r freshing and it's a shame h 's one of the few lingering politi ca l figures who is not afraid to le t what is truth and ri g ht b e hea rd ," Andrew Johnson. a junior from Chenoa, Ill ., said . Amy Conner, a senior from Brighton. Colo .. he ld a re la ted opinion. "Ir sp c ted what he had to say and appreciated his mora l values." Some students were more impressed with the fa c t tha t American Studies brought Quayl e to the Harding campus than with Quay le himse lf. "I thought it was interesting that someone as w e ll known as Dan Quayle would speak at Harding . In fa c t , I was impressed that they could get som one of such notori e ty ." junior Bart Blasengame said. The general consensus of students, rega rdl ess of the ir opinion of Quayle as a political I ader , was one of r sp c t at his willingness to speak at Harding.
