Moving from a large city to Searcy is a. . . Leaving home to go to college always involves a number of adjustments. For many, making the transitions from "big" cities to one the size of Searcy was one of the toughest. "This is going to take some adjusting to," said Irene Bedolla , BIG TRANSITION a freshman from Chicago, Illinois. "Activity" seemed to be the most noticable difference. "I miss the big city because there was always something to do there," saidMissy Grady, a freshman from Littleton, Colorado. Hanging out at Wal-Mart, Frozen D's and TCBY were often the most creative ways students had of finding something "fun" to do in the city of Searcy, with its 16,000 residents. The Student Association planned special activities each weekend. Many students stayed on campus for club sports , movies and concerts, to do laundry, or even to play volleyball or frisbee on the front lawn. Most, however, drove to Little Rock occasionally to eat out, shop or go to a movie. But even without the excitement of a big city, Searcy had its advantages. Most students felt secure in its small-town environment. "The people here are really friendly and they always ask if you are from Harding," said Sherrie Krebs, a freshman from Glen Allen, Virginia. For the most part, students liked Searcy. The environment, the diversity and the stores were cited as unique aspects when compared to larger cities.
