They may not have much of it, but students make the most of their. Tests , quizzes, essays and term papers are all things people associate with college. Although the main goal of college is to further a student's education and prepare him/ her for the job market, it's important to remember that play is also important. College isn't just grades and degrees; it's a place where hobbies are pursued, students get to know each other, and where memories are made. SPARE TIME Before and after classes, the student center was a popular gathering place. During the day, a person could walk in and find almost every table filled with people talking, laughing and socializing. Conversation topics ranged from intramural sports and visits to Heber Springs , to job interviews and summer mission trips. "The student center was probably my favorite place on campus ," said senior Doug Horton. "I could eat, visit withmy fdends , and keep from being bored all at the same time. " Time away from classes was spent in leisure activities as well. Many students made exercise a regular part of their day. Several students had autilus gym memberships so they could play racquetball, lift weights or do aerobics. And on any given night, dozens of students could be found running at the track. "Sometimes when I felt tense I'd go running, " said freshmen Tish Elliot. "It was often a struggle to make myself do it, but after I got back from running, I'd always feel better than I did before I left. " On Friday and Saturday nights , movie-going was a common activity. The Student Association usually showed a movie in the Benson Auditorium, and the Searcy Cinema V was always glad to welcome Harding students. For those who ventured out of Searcy, Little Rock provided a nice break from the usual weekend routine. There, a student could not only see a movie, but eat at a wide variety of restaurants, attend a baseball game, ice skate, shop at a mall or attend a concert. Regardless ofyour class load, there was time to enjoy life, and to thank God for giving you the opportunity to live it. - Marquis Jackson Brian Reis and Jennie Simmons talk withfriends in thestudent center.
