By switching places for the day, Ashby and Burks. GAIN NEW PERSPECTIVES Oh, to be president of Harding University! Though only a dream for most students, on Friday, October 15, it became reality for Kim Ashby. Ashby roared onto the Benson stage in a white limousine and surrounded by black-clad bodyguards. Through the rest ofchapel, Ashby assumed the role of president by reading announcements and showing a promo ofDr. Burks helping her do TV-19's weather newscast. Meanwhile, Burks sat in Ashby's seat and chatted with her friends. The Student Association granted Ashby this honor after her name was drawn from amond hundreds of ballots which were filled out by the students who attended the Rick Walters concert. During the day, Kim was allowed to do anything she wanted, within reason. Students visited her in the president's office and she hosted a luncheon in the presidential dining room for about a dozen of her friends. In addition to this, her bodyguards were with her all day to ensure her safety. "It was fun being the president for a day," Ashby said, "but it was also a good opportunity to see behind the scenes - all the work his job entails." While Ashby attended to school business , Burks attended her communication classes and gave a weather forecast on TV19. "I especially enjoyed sitting in class and listening to the teachers," Burks said. "That was the highlight of my day." Burks had the privilege of sitting in on "The Acts of the Apostles ," "TV-19 Production," "Religious Applications of the Media," and "Advanced Broadcast Journalism. " SA President Rich Little presented the "President for a Day" idea to Burks early in the fall. It had been a tradition in past years and Burks said that he was more than willing to accommodate the SA in activities of this nature because they tend to break perceived barriers between the administration and the students. "It was a positive, beneficial experience," he said. Ashby and Burks met early in the semester to work out the details of their respective schedules . - Drew Rouhana Dr. Burks carries on a conversation with KimAshbyfrom a side ofhis desk to which he is quite unaccustomed.
