1993-1994 Yearbook

Founded in 1947, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the oldest and largest educational and scientific computer organization in the industry today. ACM is dedicated to the advancement of computer professionals. One of its primary functions is to provide a forum for the publication of advanced technical information. Harding's ACM chapter began in 1991 and emphasized excellence in academic computing by assisting students and faculty with available technology. ACM's access was greatly expanded in 1991 by its connection to the Internet, a ACM and Internet Access the World cooperation of networks located throughout the world connecting universities, corporations and research laboratories in several countries. An average of one million people used the resources of Internet each day. Internet also provided a wealth of services, such as access to large databases, card catalogs and libraries, including the Library of Congress. One of the most useful resources of Internet , electronic mail (e-mail) allowed messages to be sent around the world among users. Joel DeYoung, ACM chairman, said, "E-mail is quickly becoming a modern form of communication among all types of people , rapidly catching up with familiar technologies such as FAX and telephone service. With electronic mail , however, there are no postage and long distance costs." ACM's worldwide organization has grown to more than 80,000 members.
