- The Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) provided practical experience beyond the classroom for students who were interested in management professions. Through activities of the campus chapter and competition in the national conference, members SAM Magnifies Management Skills learned management skills and concepts. SAM's international conference brought key speakers from around the world and focused attention on the case competition. "It was different than any other national collegiate competitian and was completely a student case analysis and presentation," said Levon Carter, sponsor of SAM. Everyone received the same case about four weeks before the conference , and they were not allowed to solicit help from anyone. They could not practice their presentations in front of anyone. Students analyzed the case, prepared presentations and outlined their strategies in written form. At the conference, they went before a panel of judges, made and defended their proposals. SAM helped give the students some experience in managing an organization. They arranged for speakers to come to speak on subjects not covered in the classroom. They also held fundraising events and designed projects to raise money to attend the international competition. A mixer was held at the beginning of the year at Carter 's house to attract new members. SAM was an active program designed to benefit students interested in developing management skills. - Traci Busby Senior Alex Martinez tries for a hole-in-one at the SAM mixer.
