All of the debate supplies were packed and it was time to leave for another forensics tournament. After the participants filed into the van, Dr. Pat Gamer led the team in a prayer for safe travel. The forensics team has traveled out of state to compete with other schools from around the nation . The fall Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA), debate topic was, "Resolve: that the national news media in the United States impairs public understanding of political issues. " "This topic was very affirmatively biased because it's easy to prove impairment ," Roger Clayton, a senior debater from Nashville, said. Although the topic leaned heavily to Pi Kappa Delta Parleys Politics the affirmative side, the negative had ground to stand on, too. "The negative could say that the media is good, that all of the good aspects outweigh the bad aspects of media ,'' Gamer said. The 11 member forensics team consisted of two varsity, one junior varsity, two novice teams and one individual competitor who competed each semester at participating universities. They traveled to Sam Houston University, Middle Tennessee State University, Northeast Louisiana University and Vanderbilt University. "There are many people on the team who really want to learn and are willing to put forth the effort. They are doing well because of their drive to be the best," Clayton said. The skills learned on the forensics team helped to nurture many areas of life, including research skills, communication and confidence. - Julie Anderson juniorKenny Lyons and sophomorejoey Boyle researchfor an upcoming debate.
