Harding's orchestra has been a small but integral part of the campus music scene. Comprised of both students and faculty, membership is granted on an audition basis and fluctuates between 20 and 35 yearly. Patricia Cox, associate professor ofmusic, directed the orchestra. Cox said the orchestra played a unique part in campus activities, although the group was not well known. "We are the only group on campus which has a string section, " Cox said. "And we 're responsible for providing the accompaniment for the Homecoming musicals as well. " The orchestra featured 15 to 20 strings on a regular basis, Cox said, with a full wind section added for Orchestra Makes its Mark in Music the Homecoming musical and the group's annual spring concert. There were also two string quartets, comprised of orchestra members, which performed independently. Last year the group played with the Conway, Ark., Civic Orchestra and performed for the Searcy Beethoven Club, in addition to their campus engagements. "We would not be opposed to traveling and performing more than we do, " Cox said, "but right now we are really constrained by our limited budget." While additional travel may not have been possible, Cox said the group would have enjoyed performing more on campus if the opportunity had been there. "That's something that would only require us to invest a little time, and it would be enjoyable for eve1yone involved.
