Just as the flood had come unexpectedly, so had the number of students desiring to give up their Students time to help strangers eek back into Serve in St. Louis the normalcy of life. When Student Association President Rich Little asked for volunteers to help flood victims, five times the available slots showed up. Due to the overwhelming response , room was found for 505 students. On September 9, one-seventh of the tudent body traveled to the flood-devastated areas of Arnold, O'Fallon, Ma1yland Heights , Floris ant and St. Charles . "The Arnold Church of Christ divided us into smaller groups of about 15 and sent us to different places in town, " Kim Smith, a junior from Chicago, said. "My group did sandbags both days. Other students tore apart houses and helped clean up the mess left behind from the water." Because the first trip wa a tremendous success, four additional weekend trips were planned for smaller groups. During the second trip, tudents worked with students from David Lipsomb niversity. While accolades continued to come from the t. Louis area, freshman Alex Aziamov, a Russian student, expressed his thoughts this way, "I don't consider us heroes ," he said. "The real heroes are the people who are living there, the people who have to face the effects of the flood e ery day and have never given up.
