Hosts welcome Harding's guests Although the name Harding Hosts may sound new, the group was one that had existed at Harding for a long time. Until last year, they were known as FACT: Future Alumni Communications Team. Under the directorship of Dr. Jim Carr, Sr. they were given a new name and new gold jackets that made them easily identifiable to students and visitors alike. The students who were involved acted as ambassadors, representing Harding to groups visiting the campus. "They serve as hosts - greeting visitors, answering questions and guiding tours, " said Carr. Last year 's hosts volunteered after finding out about the program through announcements made in chapel , but the majority of this years recruits came from Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society for which Carr serves as a sponsor. "We have as many as 35 students , but we only use a few ata time, " explained Carr. Harding Hosts were especially used during special events such as Parents Weekend, Lectureship and Homecoming. They worked at functions such as the Black and Gold banquet and the family barbecue during Parent's Weekend - z llll!!!ll!-m:l ~ u :c Cl > • C5 -~ ... . >-- en 8 G -~··.,:ill~"''.. ~ llm-•il 80 Organizations directing guests and answering questions. They also helped greet and orientate visitors who came to Harding to attend Elderhostels and President 's Council meetings. Christy Campbell , a senior from Virginia , said, "My favorite part of the program was meeting the alumni and making them feel at home. It 's really neat getting to know them and hearing stories about what Harding was like when they were here and how it has changed. " ~ Dodi Samuel, a senior from Missouri , enjoyed working with visitors to the campus , especially people who attended elderhostels. "I liked working with elder hostel guests because they are not alumni. They come from all over, and they don't know what to expect. " Making visitors feel at home and comfortable was one of the Harding Hosts biggest responsibilities. "I like the feeling of service ," said junior Jimmy Brooks of Searcy, "of helping visitors. I dislike going somewhere and not knowing what to do and where to go for help. For that reason I enjoy being available to help and meet people's needs while they are at Harding.
