70 Academics1 Renovation Helps Student Services One of the most visible pieces of reconstruction that took place over the summer on the Harding University campus was the remodeling of the Hammon Student Center. When the student center was constructed in 1974, student enrollment was about 2,000. As the numbers grew, it became necessa1y to expand to meet the needs of a larger student body. The reconstruction expanded all areas of the student center, including the mail room, dining areas, game room and bookstore. Enlargement of the second floor made room for more and larger offices and classrooms. Students enjoyed and appreciated the larger student center. Teresa Morrow, a junior from St. Sand ra Hawk facu l ty Secretary Sa ra h Hedrick Clerk Ruth He rring Louis,Mo.. said, "Idefinitely liked the new student center. It was more pacious, and the mail room wa a lot easier to get in and out of after chapel. " adding that the new Burger King was also a very good addition. Although improvements in facilities did not improve the quality of instruction at Harding, the new student center did make some things a lot more convenient and efficient for the students. Tim Wells, a senior from an Antonio, Texas, said , ·'The new student center helped the overcrowding problems during pledge week and the after-chapel rushes for food and mail. It did a much better job of accommodating the large number of students." - David Jacobs Memphi ' Registra r Offi o : Melinda Hicks School o f Nursing Phil Hoggard Major Gi ft., O ffi cer Ch a rlean Howell Cniver, it y Rela cion~ Pa t Hugh es Memphis Deve lopmen t Office Cindy Hunte r President 's Offi ce Consrruction wo rkers put rhe finishing to uches o n the new Hammon Student Cente r.
