5 2 Academics &xiAf &ience, Histo & En lish Programs Focus on Spiritual Dimension Dr. Raymond Muncy , distinguished professor of histo1y, sec as a specific goal for 1992-93 the improvement of instruction provided to histo1y and social science majors. "It is impo1tant for the faculty to continue improving the quality of their teaching throughout their careers ," he said. The history and social sciences professors achieved this by being acrive in professional organization , participating in conventions , and sharpening their knowledge through writing. Dr. Muncy said, ·'During the year Dr. Haynie worked on a book dealing with civil war letters and I did a biography on Francis Wright, a 19th centwy feminist. These activities were important because they kept us in touch with the material we taught. " After 28 years as chairman, Muncy relinqu ished administrative responsibilities at the end of the year to return to full-time teaching. Dr. Dennis Organ, chairman of the English department, noted that the depa11ment experienced significant growth due to the Ma rk Elro d , M.A. general trend in society toward humanities b ing popular. Along with keeping the number of English major, high, the depa11ment also had as a goal to keep the upper-level cla es operating on their highquality basis. Both Dr. Muncy and Dr. Organ emphasized the spiritual focus of their departments. Dr. Muncy said, ''There is al~ ·ays a desire on the part of the faculty to be interested in not only the knowledge development of the students , but also their spiritual development. What make Harding different is that special attitude the teachers have toward each other and toward the student ." Dr. Organ said , "Our English tudent are different because we approach the study of literature from a Christian per pective.
