Alaskan Couple Join Freshman Class Jennifer and NathanWolfe held a unique distinction in the Harding student body for 1992-93 - they were the only freshman married couple from Alaska. Alaska. Jennifer said that one of the best things about it is that eve1y resident , of eve1y age , receives about $900 each year in dividends from the state 's oil industty. Checks come in November, just in time for Christmas shopping. Both Nathan and Jennifer enjoy the ruggedness of life in Alaska. They are from Anchorage , a port city which is surrounded on three sides by snow-capped mountains. "The state is a nature lover's dream come true, 11 athan said. Popular outdoor activities include snowboarding, skiing, hunting, hiking and mountain climbing. . The popular climbing spot for expert climbers is Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America. The flora and fauna of Alaska differ considerably from that of Arkansas. The area boasts no bushy shade trees. Trees there instead grow tall and skinny with most of the branches near the top. Animal life includes such creatures as bears and moose. There are lots of bears, and the moose are so prevalent that they are frequently seen in neighborhoods. Amy Murphy- t. Loui>. The Wolfes ,,·ere the on y lreshman rnarnec couple from Alaska. An interesting feature ofAlaska 's climate is the effect of such a northern latitude on the length of days. During the winter, the state receives only about five or six hours of sunlight each clay. The lack of light contributes greatly to the number of people who have difficulty with ·'cabin fever ,'' or winter depression. But the summers make up for some of this. Jennifer said it 's easy to stay outside into the wee hours of the morning in the summer, because each clay has 20 to 21 hours of daylight. "Add to this the fact that nights never get completely dark and you've got a lot of daytime to enjoy," she said. Jennifer is an 18-year-old mass communication major, and Nathan is a 19year-old Bible major, planning to work in youth minisuy. They met in January, 1991, and married exactly one year later. athan said their decision to attend Harding has taught them a lot about God and faith.They visited campus in October for West Coast Weekend. Their first impression was great, but they saw the school's expense as a hindrance. So they looked into other schools and settled on East Tennessee School of Preaching (ETSP) . They ran into so many obstacles, they considered staying and working in Anchorage. During their decision dilemma, they received a call from Harding's admissions office. When they stated their reservations about Harding , the admissions staff took action. The next call was from financia l aid, who told them that the money was there if they would accept Pell grants and were willing to pay the rest back in the future. They said "yes" and God has since blessed them greatly. athan said they have learned that, if something is in God 's plan for you , then God will supply the financial means to do it. - Melissa Forrest
